Abstract

As life expectancy has been increasing in recent decades, the percentage of the older people is continuously growing around the globe. According to the data from the Statistics Korea in 2014, the number of the older people will be approximately 16.5 million in 2040. In this rapidly aging Korean society, people's interest is shifting toward long - lasting and healthier life rather than merely extension of life with various diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by chronic and painful inflammation of the joints. Despite having differing etiologies, periodontitis and RA share many features. Mounting evidences suggest strong links between periodontitis and systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. In this review, we present relation and plausible mechanisms between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
